... Why would you *want* that?

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Thank you, Marisa, Leona, Carling, Brittany, Rachel and Nicole, for not throwing me a Twilight-themed bridal shower or bachelorette party.

Seriously. Why would you want that? I mean, it didn't even cross my mind to ask for a Pirates-themed party (though in hindsight, that was clearly a missed opportunity).

Speaking of Pirates, I finally got my Christmas present. I am very NOT impressed with the guy Billy bought it from.

But I have a six foot tall Captain Jack Sparrow in my room now. Pictures will be forthcoming once Billy gets home from class and can take a proper picture for me.

Because in the face of financial armageddon, I need some good news...

Johnny Depp signed on for Pirates of the Caribbean 4

I could take or leave a fourth Pirates film. I'm happy with the way the trilogy ended up, and feel like there's definitely plenty of room for more stories but not that they have to be told.

On the other hand, if they tried to tell any stories without Captain Jack Sparrow (played by Johnny Depp, naturally. Who would be crazy enough to try to step into those shoes?) I would have freaked out. Now they just need to get the original script writers on board (they are apparently currently working on The Lone Ranger, which is also starring Johnny Depp) and I will be totally at ease with this fourth movie :-)

Argh, it be that holiest of der holy days!

Happy talk like a pirate day, everyone. My favorite holiday. That I am way too wiped to participate in (honestly, I completely forgot about it until I saw blog posts this morning. And I'm so tired/lazy that I haven't even gotten up to change into one of my pirate shirts to celebrate).

Spending two days walking around Manhattan is hard work, apparently. And I only have today to rest up and recover before spending two more days out there. I'm finally beginning to feel like I'm really living in New York.

Saddest? Really?

Hollywood's Five Saddest Attempts at Feminism

For the link-phobic, here's the list:
5) Eowyn (Lord of the Rings)
4) Padme Amidala (Star Wars prequels)
3) River Tam (Serenity)
2) Catwoman (Batman Returns)
1) Elizabeth Swann (Pirates of the Caribbean)

I can totally get behind three-fifths of this list. There's one-fifth where I haven't seen the movie. And then there's a final fifth that has me struggling.

'Cause...Elizabeth? Really? The saddest attempt Hollywood has made at giving us a feminist hero?

As much as I looooooooooooooove the Pirate movies (seriously, I don't think there are enough "o"s on earth for me to convey that), I know they certainly aren't a paragon of feminism. But in Elizabeth Swann the screenwriters certainly crafted a complex character throughout the three films. She certainly goes through more growth during the films than either Will or Jack. She does suffer from tokenism and clearly the film doesn't pass the Bechdel test (did Elizabeth and Anamaria ever really speak in the first one? Aside from Anamaria holding a blade to Elizabeth's throat. Then in Dead Man's Chest Tia Dalma gives Elizabeth a mug of something to help with the sadness (over Jack's death) and in At World's End...I recall Elizabeth and Tia Dalma standing on the ship alone for a minute. Did they talk?). But this is certainly not the saddest attempt at feminism in Hollywood.

My brief thoughts on the others on the list:
Eowyn: Definitely see this one, though I think a lot of the problems stem from the source material. Not an excuse, but that's why they did it. Padme Amidala: I only saw Revenge of the Sith (James Earl Jones was back as the voice of Darth Vader! I had to watch! And then feel betrayed afterwards) and WOW was that a piece of crap overall, and Amidala's death especially. Crap, crap, crap. River Tam: IMHO, she deserved to be number one on this list. ~ducks to avoid the wrath of the Joss-fen~ Catwoman: ~hangs head~ I haven't seen Batman Returns. I really should sometime

One Day

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
"One Day" from At World's End kills me every time I hear it. The beginning is such a sweet and haunting melody (it was my second choice for a processional song after Jack Sparrow's theme, though I'm very happy with choice number three) and then it builds to great drama in the middle before going back to being sweet and melancholy and...~sigh~ It's currently slated to be the last song of our "pre-show" music for the wedding (is there an actual name for that time? Weddings seem to be hyper-structured everywhere else), which, at this point, will pretty much guarantee I am sobbing by the time it's my turn to walk down the aisle. But I'm sure I'd cry eventually anyway (Billy turned me into such a freaking sap!), so might as well get it out of the way first thing, right?

Know what also sucks? That my parents have had one wedding-related chore for a week and have been unable to fulfill it. It was a simple task, too! Just call their church and see if we can use it for the ceremony (since the room at Doubletree lacks drama. Have I mentioned this before?) I called them last Saturday night to see if they could ask at church on Sunday. Well, apparently talking "business" on Sundays is rude we are, Friday night, and no call has been made. And no one will be at the office tomorrow.

Isn't is supposed to be too early in this process to get frustrated?

Billy works until 11:30. Friday nights alone suck. It's snowing just enough that I don't want to go drive anywhere, and I probably shouldn't be spending money right now, anyway, so...I'll just sit here. Because my life is exciting.

I need to stop listening to this song. It's beautiful and wonderful and depressing

This makes me happy

Newsweek has an article this week about the uber-sexy Halloween costumes that are coming out for girls (like, 6 year old girls). And then at the end of the article they have a link to an Elizabeth costume, officially licensed from Disney, of her costume from the second movie.

More evidence that Pirates is probably the most bad ass movie trilogy of all time. And USA is even showing Curse of the Black Pearl, un-cut, on my birthday :-)

Ugh. I want time to move faster. Billy is taking me out for lunch when he gets out of class, but that's not for another half an hour, and I'm hungry (and freezing cold) now!

Now that I'm done with my paper Pirates shows up at the dollar theatre. Seriously. WTF?

In other news: Still cramping. I repeate, WTF?

Going out to dinner in a minute with some of the guys. I finished up my statistical analysis stuff for GTP this morning. I think Chris mentioned he has another set for me to look at.

Also I have to go to the library at some point and print out my reading stuff for class tomorrow. Maybe I'll go to the student center after playing GTP. Yeah, that sounds like a plan.

ARGH. Cramp.

Notes: I surely wasn't the only one pissed that Anamaria wasn't in Dead Man's Chest, right? So here's the femmeslashy explanation of what she was up to and why she wasn't on the Pearl. I'm terrible at writing accents (especially one that I've only heard once so far), so instead of subjecting you to poorly written ones, you'll just have to imagine their sexy voices for yourself. Enjoy!
Anamaria had heard Jack’s stories. Of a vodoun priestess who was never opposed to helping a black soul in need – for a price, of course. Likeall good pirates, she demanded payment to ensure her trouble was worthwhile.

in this scene she approaches him, and is in fact the aggressor in their kiss. She leans forward to kiss him, and pushes him back towards the mast, running her hands over his body as a man might in any other summer blockbuster.

I've also referenced shirtless Jack in AWE, and Elizabeth's sexy pouty face.

I feel dirty. But don't care enough at this point to change it.

I have finished the first paragraph of my Pirates paper.

I can fit three lines of paragraph two on the first page.

This paper is going to go over the page limit, I just know it...

Pirates of the Caribbean Online

I am soooooooooooooo joining. Anyone with me?

Finished watching At World's End last night. Sobbed, of course. God I'm a wuss. What the hell? Does anyone else cry at this movie? I'm clearly lame.

It's really funny, I've been taking notes on all of the movies for my paper. The first movie has three pages in my notebook, the second two, and this final one just one and a half. The fewer notes on the second one make sense; I'm focusing on Jack and Elizabeth and at least a third of that movie focuses on just Will. However I started out taking very diligent notes for three and by the time they got to Davy Jones' locker I pretty much stopped until the Pearl was about to fight the Dutchman. Then I stopped again because I was CRYING MY EYES OUT.

So I have my movie notes together. I have my research notes together. Now I just need to put all of this into a coherent paper!

Really? REALLY?

The syllabus says we're doing a final paper workshop today. So I stayed up until four in the morning, re-watching the first Pirates (yes, that was a very hard part of my research ;-) and collecting my thoughts into something that could be presented in a small group to get feedback.

Today we discussed Psycho and she let us go an hour early so she could do individual mini-conferences with people (I'd already met with her on Monday).

All those hours of sleep I could have had instead...
