Updates, updates...

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
It's a slow day in the office, and no one else is here at the moment, so I figured messing around on IJ is a legitimate use of my time :-)

Update on Epic Gas WTF 2009: Twitter/Facebook followers know that the gas company showed up mere minutes before Billy had to leave for rehearsal on Wednesday. And then proceeded to tell Billy that the stove/oven was still broken (it was unclear where the leak was actually coming from still). When I got home I asked the super to look at it, and he determined the regulator was broken. So the stove guy came by yesterday (allegedly - I had to leave my key with the super because Billy has class all day Thursday), but didn't have the right part. Hopefully he comes by today with the right one because I'm tired of not being able to cook (we had a huge batch of groceries delivered on Monday and I don't want my veggies to go bad!). Luckily, my boss took pity on my yesterday and gave me $20 so Billy and I could order pizza for dinner, rather than repeating the balogna sandwich dinner of Wednesday evening.

COUNTDOWN TO THE END OF MY TIME AT BANANA REPUBLIC: Got my schedule for my last week and it doesn't completely suck! 11:15-6:45 on Sunday, then the usual 6-10 Monday and Thursday. And then I'll volunteer for a short shift on Saturday because it's holiday pay and it's not like I have any other plans for the 4th. Only working a morning shift though - not a chance in hell I'm volunteering to close on my last day.

Computer update: Computer started acting extremely wonky last week - clearly had a virus, the type that doesn't let you open up Spybot or Malware Bytes. Downloaded AdAware which would run, but never cleaned out the virus for very long. Bought Norton AntiVirus, which did better, but there was also one pesky program that would never leave. And then sometime overnight Wednesday my computer froze and whenever I tried to restart it on Thursday it would go to blue screen of death immediately after I booted it up. And Safe Mode wasn't an option - I can't remember the last time I actually got safe mode to work on my computer.

So Thursday after work I selected the non-destructive recovery option on the computer and reinstalled the whole OS while all of my files were saved on another part of the drive. Woke up early this morning to start fiddling with settings and the like - running my antivirus program again (since whatever virus I had was probably backed up with my files), messing around with Google Chrome (really, really love the concept of the browser. Hate that they don't have an efficient adblocker, so I'm sticking with Firefox for awhile longer). As of 9:00 am this morning, the computer was looking good - Norton had found a virus during its quick scan and got rid of it with no problem. Still can't run Safe Mode, though, which troubles me and probably signals that before too long I'll have to replace the computer. Can't afford to buy a whole new machine right now, though I'm hoping to get a Netbook soon for writing (and free wifi over in Madison Square Park intrigues me), or perhaps I'll hold off until the fall to see what these Android-powered smartbooks are like.

Anyone have some computer advice for me?

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I'm considering picking up a new laptop, to be used exclusively (at least that's what I tell myself now!!) for writing. I feel that my desktop is loaded down with too many distractions, not to mention I get all paranoid that Billy is going to look over my shoulder and read what I'm writing (I'm very defensive of my stuff when it's all fresh and new).

So I need a teeny tiny lapotop - teeny tiny so I can, say, take it to Madison Square Park and write on my lunch break. Back in my freshman year of college I had a full size laptop that I hauled around with me to classes - really, it wasn't all that portable. Most laptops aren't I find.

So I'm thinking of maybe getting a netbook? General opinion online, judging from the Googling I was doing last night, seems to be split on how useful netbooks actually are. Plus, unlike most people purchasing a netbook it seems, I don't actually give a shit about the internet; I want to write (so I gather the 7" screens are out because those end up with teeny tiny keyboards and even my small hands have limits). Anyone have a netbook yet? Should I go for one of them now, or save up my money for months (and months and months) and go for a super light but more full featured laptop like a Macbook Air (which are so sexy but I don't know if I can justify spending that much on a computer right now, lol).

... Really this post is just a timefiller before I go to work. I am getting antsy because I don't have my wedding pictures yet, despite being promised the link would be in my mailbox by yesterday. Argh.

Any Firefox experts on my Flist?

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
'Cause I keep having a problem with Firefox - and it's been going on for ages now, but considering it's happened to me three times TODAY, I'm getting sick and tired of living with it.

For no discernible reason, Firefox will stop playing sounds. It won't play sounds in flash games, from YouTube videos...anything. The only thing that fixes it is re-starting my computer.

I can play things in other browsers, and it will even play iTunes via my FoxyTunes add-on, so it doesn't seem to be the computer, just the browser doing random stuff that makes me grumpy.

I have enough in my life making me grumpy right now, so if someone fixes my computer for me, you will officially be named a saint.

HOLY SHIT

I have a computer again.

It has a completely blank harddrive, however, so I've spent the last hour putting some essentials on it. Like Firefox ~hugs and loves it~ and various plug ins and spyware things so I can surf the web in relative safety.

So since I'm starting over fresh...what programs should I put on my (essentially) new computer? What Firefox addons can you not live without? (I already have Adblock Plus, Chroma Tabs, del.icio.us bookmarks, Download statusbar, flashblock, Foxytunes, IE Tab and PDF download)

I'm going to go back to transferring my (mostly) saved data from the LAST time this thing was in the shop back onto the computer. I've moved my music files back on, so now I have working music.

Gift mystery solved!

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I picked up my package from UPS this afternoon. I pried apart all of the tape sealing the box while I was in the parking lot to discover a bottle of wine. I was still confused 'cause Billy and I aren't exactly wine drinkers.

When I got home and could inspect the package fully, I discovered a card inside. From our photographer.

SHE IS AMAZING. I LOVE HER.

This is in stark contrast to the fact that, according to the electronic copy of the invoice from the hotel, I should have a hard copy of my hotel contract in my hands TODAY. Instead I have a 2005 Smoking Loon Chardonnay that I have no idea what to do with. But it's the thought that counts, right?

Going out to Ichiban with Billy, James and Rachel soon. Good. 'Cause I'm starving.

Oh! My computer is back at Best Buy. They had to replace the hard drive. Boooooo. But that means all of the repairs were covered under my warranty. Yay! Now I'm just paying $29 to have them optimize it because I really don't want to sit through hours of Windows updates. It's a small price to pay for convenience.

Saw the forensics team off this morning. And by "off" I mean I was there until the bus arrived, 'cause the bus didn't even show up until the time I had to leave. I delivered little notes of encouragement to all of the students. Wrote most of them in the span of a couple of hours last night (it would have been less, but I spent some of that time talking to Rb, then taking a shower and watching Eli Stone); practice for thank you notes, I figure. It was fun writing out all of the inside jokes I've accumulated with people over the years (oh, and I TOTALLY rickroll'd Jon Stowell. A real life, text-based rickroll. 'Cause I'm awesome like that).

I miss the team already :-( I so wish I'd been able to go with them! Work SUCKS like that. But I know the team is going to do AWESOME. Hey, Lauren, if you read this: are you sending your letter to the Hotmail address? I never got a chance to print mine out and in the craziness that was this morning I never had a chance to ask Amy where I should send it.

Okay, I think I need to find a snack before dinner, because yes, I am THAT hungry.

Present?

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I got home from work this evening to find a note from UPS on my door. Apparently I have a package from here waiting for me. That's my best guess, at least. When you Google "GB Russo & Son" that's the first hit, and the package originated in Grand Rapids. So...yeah.

In case you haven't guessed yet, I definitely did not order anything from them. I've never even heard of them until I Google'd it. I have no idea what's going on. I can only imagine my mom sent me something, but no one's home answering the phone so I have no way of finding out.

I also don't get to pick it up until tomorrow after work. Boo. And since they're only open until 6, just like the bank, I need to go there INSTEAD of the bank, which THUS means I'll have to wake up obnoxiously early on Saturday to go to the bank to deposit my paycheck. Stupid UPS. Why can't I choose what UPS location I use to pick up my package? 'Cause there's a place that's actually on my way home from work where I could have picked it up. It's so convenient that I probably could have gone there AND the bank in one fell swoop. And even if I couldn't, that place is open on Saturdays.

In short, UPS=Lame

Work also=lame because the team leaves for Nationals tomorrow. Without me. THAT SUCKS. I'm going to get to see the team off, though, which will be nice. Wish them all luck one last time and all that.

Dammit. That means I'm going to have to e-mail my letter. I meant to write it while I was at work today so I could print it out, but we are crazy overloaded so no writing for me. And since I still don't have my computer from Best Buy, the printer on my desk is pretty much worthless.

In other news, Billy has convinced me that I need to start writing romance novels. Especially for these people. Any thoughts?

That seems like a lot...

Best Buy wants $140 to reinstall Windows. Seriously?

Please tell me I know someone who can do it for significantly less.

Also: they put waaaaaaaaay too much garlic on my pizza at lunch. And I
loooooooove garlic, so that's saying something.

Work today is crazy. It's nice to be busy, but it's not helping the
funk I'm in due to PMS (stupid doctor not re-prescribing my birth
control in time. I DO NOT WANT TO BLEED THIS WEEK. Or any week,
really, but I'm digressing) + not going to prep + crazy complicated
orders.

Seriously? Wtf.

Lj-mood: pissed off

So, I've documented my computer woes here before. How much I hate Best
Buy, they suck, blah blah blah.

I woke up this morning and my computer is doing the exact same fucking
thing that it was two months ago. It looks like maybe the computer had
to re-start to install a Windows update (Billy's computer had that alert
on it when I got on his computer this morning. And can I just register
for the record how much I HATE those automatic updates? I'll admit, I'm
lazy; I leave shit open on my desktop all the time because I never turn
my computer off. So to have that shit fucked with because Windows
decides it needs to update some shit pisses me off) and now...it won't
load completely. Just like a month ago.

So I think what I'm going to do is call Best Buy and ask them to explain
exactly what they did to fix it last time and/or get one of their lovely
Geek Squad people come to my place to look at it. And then I will
either call Nick Burden or Circuit City to actually help fix it.

Of course, the latter means that ONCE AGAIN I won't be able to save ANY
of my paycheck, as it will all have to go towards paying immediate
expenses. I'm never going to get to New York at this rate.

I hate life.

My computer got virus bombed somehow last night. It was working all fine and dandy and then Billy downloaded a fucking WORD file (yeah, I know, evil and malicious file type there) and POOF. No more working computer. It froze, so we restarted it and it would only get to the XP loading screen before it crapped out. When we tried to start it in SafeMode a bunch of gobbledygook appeared on the screen.

Took it to BestBuy this morning (since it's still - thank god - under warrantee. I was worried that I'd only gotten the 1 year, which means the warrantee would have ended last week). For $99 my data will be backed up - hopefully (I realized on the way home that I'd saved my file of wedding notes in a different place than I usually save my text files, which means that it might not be saved. This makes Angela VERY sad). But I'm without a computer for "a couple of weeks."

A couple of weeks.

I haven't been that long without a computer of my own since I started college.

Kind of want to die now.
