Award Season musings
So yesterday the news was that the Screen Actors Guild may strike and affect the Oscars which made me go "Boo!" 'cause I'm counting on the specter of the Oscars to set the mood for the wedding (we're getting married the night before the Oscars - it was totally coincidental that we decided to go with a movie theme!).
And then today they announce that Hugh Jackman will be hosting! Squee! I love Hugh Jackman. Except the people at that particular blog are idiots - they don't think he can handle hosting the Oscars. Apparently they missed how utterly charming he was back when he hosted the Tony's (I forget what year, but it was a totally awesome one. The show came back from commercial to show Hugh Jackman leading the audience in a sing along of "Oh What a Beautiful Morning." And LL Cool J presented an award with Carol Channing, who was clearly not doing to well due to being rather ancient, and LL Cool J kept a steadying hand on her arm and helped her along with the banter. Very very sweet of him). Clearly the comedian track hasn't been working for the Oscars for the last couple of years (though I personally liked Jon Stewart and LOVED Ellen), so I think this is a great change up. Possibly they're thinking that Hugh Jackman will attract a larger audience, to compensate for the fact that, judging by the Golden Globe nominations, the Best Picture contenders will all be lame movies no one has actually seen, which always translates into low ratings for the Oscar broadcast.
Speaking of the Golden Globes: Meryl Streep has achieved a record-breaking 23 Golden Globe nominations. I haven't seen nearly enough Meryl Streep films: I saw Mamma Mia! this summer, and I watched part of The Devil Wears Prada on TV one night. (Just checked her IMDB page: turns out I saw her in A Series of Unfortunate Events, but I really don't remember anything from that movie. And I tried watching The Hours once, and got incredibly bored). When I can afford to have Netflix again, I'm going to go through and obsessively rent her films, like I've done with Johnny Depp.
