Summary: Cassie has learned a lot from Rachel. That doesn't mean she knows everything.

Being friends with Rachel was always a learning experience.

Learning how to smile and nod when she claimed that by spending you were saving at a sale. Learning how to trade shopping trips for help in the barn.

Learning how to love her even as the war destroyed her.

Cassie had learned about the ticklish spot behind her knee when they were kids at a slumber party, and continued to use it to her advantage during the few times they had to just be girls. Despite the awkward positions it sometimes left them in when a boy came and found them.

She'd learned how to let go when Rachel started to spend her free time with Tobias - just as Cassie had begun to spend her time with Jake. Learning to do what was right, putting the slumber party kissing lessons to good use.

The learning curve was steep for Cassie, but they learned together how to fight and how to kill.

Cassie learned how refreshing soft, human skin felt under her hands after spending hours in the armor of an insect, or the fur of a wolf. She didn't care whose skin it was, she just needed the affirmation that someone was there.

That she was there.

They learned together what idiots boys could be, guardedly sharing stories in the valley while everyone else was asleep. Cassie wasn't sure if Rachel truly trusted her - or even liked her. She wasn't even sure if she really liked Rachel that much anymore.

But there was an unmistakable allure to her golden hair and icy eyes, her dedication to her cause, even if she took it too far.

And then....

She wasn't there. Jake had sent her to die. The last Cassie saw of her was an image on a screen, tearfully saying she loved...Tobias. Of course.

Cassie had learned a lot being Rachel's friend. That didn't mean she didn't have anything left.
  • This is... so sad and sweet. I read Animorphs years ago-- one seriously good series (if a little long!!). Did you like the ending? :-/
    • I don't know if I've met anyone who genuinely liked the ending. Some people were less ravingly upset about it than I was (I threw the book across the room after chapter...2 or 3. Whenever Rachel died. Fucking bullshit death. That could have been handled SO MUCH BETTER). The actual end I disliked as well, but I'm not still bitter about it like I am about Rachel's death (I wrote sooooooo many fics back in the day that "fixed" the ending somehow, or ignored it completely, lol. Maybe I'll dig some of those out as I continue re-posting. I already think I'm going to start back on the challenge I claimed Rachel/Cassie for)
